  1. Bom dia,

Ainda hoje sigo incorporando melhoramentos . Excelente obra, limpo e bem organizado sistema de filtragem . Parabéns

    2. Dear Eugene, I have no drawings, I just assembled the things! I used a can of paint, one diesel filter holder, two diesel standard filters, some hoses, PVC tubes and PVC conections and a homemade TNT fabric filter for a coarse filtering. Best Regards, Mathias

  10. Hi Mathias, I am a student working in the area of dry-EDM, and is planning to built the system by our own. So after going through your blog, I felt that u may be able to help me with some of my problems which I am facing. As the major problem which I faced is to build a servo system for a slide to advance & retract automatically as per the input which we may provide to the system. Please share me some info so that I can incorporate the same in my machine too. My id is minksri62@gmail.com
    Waiting for your reply.

    1. Dear Mayank, so, all information I have, are in this blog, what do you really need? The servo works by using a circuit that is a simple voltage comparator, like LM339, to drive a H-bridge IC L239D, which drives the geared DC motor up and down. I really suggest you to buy the book from Ben Fleming, is a good start to understand the servo.

    2. Thank you so much for your reply...Also I would like to know from you that how you are to sense the gap between the two electrodes? or what is the best way to sense the gap on a real time basis by the help of which we can provide the feed? Please share your views.

    3. dear sir,

also i want to know how to detect spark gap and convert that spark gap in analog voltage.so that that voltage feed to voltage compactor for feedrate control. waiting for your replay

      thanks regards

    4. Dear PARTH, I wanna suggest you to buy the book from Mr. Fleming. The gap voltage is high (around 60-120VDC), this voltage is lowered with some resistors and feed directly into the LM339. Than you have a reference voltage (60VDC) for the LM339, again lowered with resistors. If the gap voltage is higher than the reference voltage, than the RAM goes down, if lower, it goes up. This way it mantains a constant gap distance and working voltage. The circuit is not this simple but it works this way.

  11. Dear Matthias,
My name is Ben Tubbing, email ben@bjdt.be
I see you have built a Ben Fleming design EDM! Myself, I have done EDM as a hobby since about 1995. I wanted to lachine Inconel parts for a miniature gas turbine. At that time I built a machine quite like Ben Fleming's. The hobby went quiet for many years, then I picked it up again some two years ago. You can see recent work at:
    https://gallery.autodesk.com/fusion360/projects/45926/copper-dies-for-spark-erosion-of-an-inconel-718-miniature-gas-turbine-vane-set?searched=
I am in contact with Ben Fleming since about a year, and we share an interest in making an EDM using switched-mode power-supply technology. I have been doing experiments, and I have now a 180V, 2.5A pilot spark supply, plus a 40V, 10A main spark supply.
If you are interested to discuss, send me an email.
    Kind regards, Ben

    1. Dear Ben,
      Realy nice work you do!
For me building this EDM was just for learning more about electronics and hobby.
I have a similar project with a gas turbine but a larger turbine, 62mm in diameter and 21 blades.
If you can send me more fotos about youre system, will be great to discuss about.
      Best regards,
      Mathias

  13. Hello Mathias, I've finished my EDM as per Ben's book and still doing tests, mostly "dry" on the bech, no dielectric. Once I've tested with dielectric in manual mode (manual elektrode down in 0.005mm steps) just to see if sparking will start, what would be the voltage, current etc. Now I am intrigued with C9 from Ben's schematic. I just like to know if you've used oscilloscope during your tests (you've mentioned learning) and did you find that C9 value is to small? Or you did not change any components. Thanks.

    ResponderExcluir
    Respostas
    1. Ok, I think I've concluded already that C9 is not even needed. What Ben saying on page 4-5 is not right. Also his scope image doesn't seem to be right. This C9 is very small and charges/discharges in only 6us. I guess at one point in time he was thinking is needed. Comparator in this design cannot follow fast gap voltage changes (in order of kHz) and it works on average gap voltage (TP8). C9 would only work as a pulsed gap voltage filter but it would raise tp8 voltage and need to be quite larger in value.
